A Family Library Program Celebrating American History

Libraries are the perfect place for families to explore history together. If you’re looking for a program that gets kids moving, thinking, and working as a team, a library-wide scavenger hunt is a fantastic option.

The Great American Scavenger Hunt  turns your library into an interactive adventure where families solve clues connected to American history and culture. Along the way, participants search for images related to:

  • National landmarks
  • Famous Americans
  • Historical events
  • National symbols

Instead of a lecture-style history program, this activity encourages families to discover information themselves while exploring the library.

Even better? It requires minimal setup and works well for families, school-age children, or multi-generational groups.

Program Overview

In this program, families receive a scavenger hunt clue sheet containing clues about American history and culture. Each clue directs participants to locate a specific image in the library.

Once they find the correct item, they write down the corresponding letter on their sheet before moving on to the next clue.

Families work together to solve all of the clues and complete the hunt. Once completed, they will unscramble the letters for the final puzzle.

At the end, participants can return their sheet for a small prize, sticker, or bookmark.

Here are some prize ideas:

Why This Program Works

This program is consistently popular because it combines several elements that keep families engaged:

Movement
Participants explore different areas of the library instead of sitting in one place.

Problem Solving
Clues require kids to think, search, and make connections.

Teamwork
Families collaborate to solve clues together.

Library Discovery
Participants naturally interact with books and resources they may not have otherwise noticed.

It’s a wonderful way to help families build positive memories in the library while learning something new.

Setup

Preparation for this program is simple with a ready-to-print PDF file listed below!

There are 12 images connected to American history topics. Cut them out and place them around the library.

The Answer Key provides a space for locations so the facilitator can easily provide hints if needed.

Final Thoughts

Programs like this are a great reminder that learning about history doesn’t have to feel formal or complicated. When families are invited to explore the library, solve clues, and discover new books together, history becomes something they experience rather than just hear about. A scavenger hunt like this encourages curiosity, teamwork, and movement—while also helping participants connect with the library’s collection in a meaningful way. Sometimes the best way to learn about the past is simply to go looking for it together.
